How to store potatoes properly so they’re not drenched in ‘weird and slimy goo’

Potatoes are tricky little vegetables to store, so you should have every trick in your arsenal to ensure they are being stowed away correctly.

Facing the problem of not being able to store potatoes so that they last, an individual took to advice platform Reddit to air their frustrations about storing potatoes.

They said: “Storing potatoes has baffled me for a long time now. Whenever I buy potatoes, I try to cook them as soon as I can because I don’t trust myself to store the potatoes properly.

“Every time I put my potatoes away they either sprout like crazy or get drenched in what I can only describe as this weird and slimy goo.”

In the Reddit forum, people gave an array of ways to store your potatoes to make sure that they don’t get liquidy and gross.

Mirroring that sentiment, someone else said: “The best way to store potatoes is to keep them in a cool dry place, in something that is not airtight (so they can get ventilation). If you buy potatoes that come in a plastic bag, you should take them out of the plastic bag for storage.”

Someone else said that a paper bag works wonders. They wrote: « Mom grows potatoes and when we harvest in the fall they last till spring. We ran out around March this year. Big paper bags from Home Depot I believe and they’re stored under a burlap blanket in the garage. We live in prairies where winters get to -40s. »

And with a final suggestion, an additional individual said to simply buy potatoes that are not washed. « As my grandfather used to say: If they come right out of the dirt, you can keep them in a cool, dark and dry place all winter. »
