Melt away toilet limescale with 29p ‘game-changing’ cleaning trick – bleach ‘won’t work’

Limescale occurs as a result of calcium and magnesium being left behind when hard water evaporates, and it can build up in appliances as well as the toilet and shower.

Posting on the Mrs Hinch Cleaning Tips page, Kate Johnson wrote: “Does anyone have any advice on getting rid of this tough toilet limescale in my new house, I’ve tried bleach?”

The social media user also attached a photo to the post which showed a build-up of limescale in the bottom of the toilet.

The post attracted more than 50 comments from other cleaning enthusiasts recommending cleaning tips, including white vinegar.

Lisa McGann wrote: “Before you go to bed, empty the water from the toilet and pour white vinegar down it until the morning. Repeat if necessary.”

Sarah Nelson said: “Bleach won’t work so you need to use something else such as white vinegar. Add some directly into the toilet bowl and use the brush to mix it around, it’s game-changing.

“Leave it to work and you can also add some baking soda to create a reaction if you want to, it could be more effective. Scrub and the limescale should melt away.”

The acidic nature of white vinegar makes it a great product to cut through tough limescale, especially in a toilet.

It can be picked up for as little as 29p from supermarkets such as Tesco as well as Home Bargains.

Checkatrade experts said: “Boil water and pour it over the limescale build-up, then use a brush to scrub the areas.

“Pour vinegar over the limescale and let it sit for a few minutes. Use a brush to scrub it off.

“Use a commercial cleaner specifically designed to remove limescale. Whichever you choose, be sure to rinse the area thoroughly afterwards to remove any remaining chemicals or vinegar.

“If limescale build-up is severe, it may take a few tries before it’s completely removed.”

Other Mrs Hinch fans recommended using Harpic’s Power Plus Toilet Cleaner which claims to be 10 times better than bleach.

It helps to remove limescale, tough stains, rust, urine stains as well as dirt build-up in the toilet.

One group member said: “Harpic black will do the trick, I won’t use anything else on my toilets now.

“Leave it for around an hour, but ideally overnight if you can and your toilet will be sparkling.”
