Drivers urged to avoid breaking major motorway’s laws making £8k a day

When asked whether the 60 mph trial had improved pollution, Stephen Elderkin, National Highways’ Director of Environmental Sustainability, said: “We are working hard to finalise the analysis of the vast amount of data collected and will be publishing the reports in due course,” according to The Telegraph.

During the motorway’s trial along its entire 18-mile length, drivers received 119,204 fines for ignoring speed limits and lane closures.

This figure translates to motorists receiving £11,920,400 in fines or £8,164 daily.

Lanes can close with a Red X if a car has broken down in an area with no accessible shoulder in a live lane.

Breaking lane closure rules results in a £100 minimum fine, like speeding.

According to collected data, about three motorists per day were driving in closed lanes during the four years.

The motorway’s trial remains ongoing.
