Max Verstappen threatens to quit Red Bull if F1 team axe Helmut Marko | F1 | Sport

Max Verstappen has stated that he ‘can’t continue’ at Red Bull, should close ally Helmut Marko lose his job. The Austrian advisor is facing an internal investigation and expects to be suspended after the Saudi Arabian Grand Prix.

In the aftermath of qualifying at the Saudi Arabian GP on Friday, a Motorsport.com report confirmed that Marko is the subject of an internal investigation relating to media leaks surrounding the Christian Horner situation.

While Red Bull has yet to comment publicly on the matter, Marko told Austrian broadcaster ORF that he could be suspended by the company after this weekend, making his presence at the Australian Grand Prix in two weeks doubtful.

This could have a huge impact on deciding the future of star driver Verstappen, who sees Marko as an extremely close ally. He told De Telegraaf: « I have always indicated to the team that Helmut is very important.

« For me, and for the team. And therefore also for my future, I don’t like the option of him leaving. Is it then clear what is happening? Yes. I have always said that Helmut should stay with it. I can’t continue without him.”

Marko also touched on the comments, stating: « I’ll put it this way, it’s difficult to judge or let’s put it this way, ultimately, I’ll decide for myself what I do. The theoretical possibility always exists. »

He added: « I think it’s such a complex issue. Again, we want peace in the team. This world championship will be difficult enough with 24 races and we have to concentrate on that. »

The team’s advisor also touched on the demands of Honda, explaining: « That’s internal, but they want a clear statement about what really happened.

“But the most important thing is that we get back to the sporting side of things and that the team concentrates on what is important. That’s working quite well at the moment.”

While the soap opera remains a distraction in the paddock, Verstappen maintained his immense performance level on the race track. The reigning champion secured a dominant pole position, seeing off the threat of Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc in style.
