How to keep cheese fresh for longer and it going mouldy with clever 29p tip

Cheese is a fridge staple for many as it can be used in many different doses or enjoyed on its own.

However, most households don’t think much about how to store cheese, and leave it in the plastic wrap it came in from the supermarket or wrapping it in cling film.

Experts on reducing food waste have thane to their TikTok @imperfectfoods to share the “best way” to store cheese in the fridge.

For this method, households will need an airtight container, a sheet of kitchen roll, and most importantly – white vinegar.

The cheese storage hack video that received over 9,000 views was captioned: “No more mouldy cheese.”

The expert in the video said: “The best way to prevent cheese from going basis to use vinegar.

“No you will not taste it and it will help prevent your cheese from moulding.”

Simply wrap the cheese you want to store in kitchen roll that is slightly damp with vinegar – the expert used white vinegar – and put it in an airtight container.

White vinegar is something most will have in their kitchen cupboards and it is cheap to buy from Asda for 29p.

The expert added that the cheese “won’t mould for weeks”, unlike it would if it was in a plastic wrap.

Moving where the cheese is stored in the fridge can often help keep it fresh for longer too

If you have space, use the vegetable drawers to store cheese. There is balanced humidity in the vegetable drawers and this area is more likely to keep at a constant temperature.

As well as this, the cheese will be kept away from the back of the fridge where it can potentially frost and cause the cheese to freeze.

Some fridges have a special cheese compartment, so utilise this if your fridge has one.

For anyone who can’t consume their cheese before the use-by date should freeze them. However, it will affect the texture and the flavour of the product.

For those who do decide to freeze cheese, wrap it in waxed cheese paper or baking parchment, place it in an airtight container before popping it in the freezer, and use it within six months.
