Thessalonki was named Greece’s first ‘City of Gastronomy’ by UNESCO in November 2021.

But as well as having award-winning cooking, the city is also known for its fun and creative vibe – owing in part to its marge student population.

The travel experts said: « While its historical offering is perhaps a little less grandiose than the Acropolis, it is no less rich: think a well-preserved Roman forum, the frescoes of the Rotunda, and Ottoman hamams. »

The article went on: « In the early 20th century, for example, Thessaloniki had the largest Jewish population in Europe, and the legacy of this Jewish community (particularly when it comes to architecture) is all around if you know where to look.

« All of this while maintaining a decidedly relaxed outlook – Athens residents will often jokingly use the term ‘halara’ in relation to Thessaloniki, denoting the city’s chilled-out atmosphere and slower pace of life. »

The White Tower is considered the city’s landmark and a must-see for visitors who can climb to the top floor and admire a beautiful 360° view of the city, the sea, and even Mount Olympus – Greece’s highest summit.

Thessalonki has many museums but The Archaeological Museum and The Museum of Byzantine Culture are often rated the top ones to visit for those wanting to immerse themselves in the city’s history.

The Old Town in the Ana Poli district is considered the historical centre of the city, which was the only surviving neighbourhood after a great fire destroyed most of the city in 1917.
