Man Utd ‘to pay clause’ after Brentford draw as Mason Greenwood leaves them no choice | Football | Sport

Manchester United are reportedly ready to trigger Juventus defender Gleison Bremer’s £51million release clause despite Mason Greenwood blocking a swap deal. The Red Devils may be set to intensify their interest in Bremer as Erik ten Hag prepares to replace Raphael Varane this summer.

Reports this week claimed that United hoped to include Greenwood in a deal for Bremer, lowering the Brazil international’s asking price.

However, the £40m-rated forward is said to have rejected the chance to join Juventus because he wants to remain in Spain beyond his season-long loan at Getafe.

Greenwood has scored eight goals and provided a further five assists in 28 appearances for the La Liga outfit, reportedly attracting interest from heavyweights including Atletico Madrid and Barcelona.

Juventus have also been mooted as one of his suitors in Italy, but are unlikely to recruit him as a sweetener for Bremer’s transfer to United.

Despite Greenwood’s reluctance to switch to Turin, United aren’t giving up on their hope of luring Bremer to Old Trafford this summer.

According to La Repubblica, the Red Devils are ready to pay his £51m release clause and skip negotiations for his signature with Juventus.

There is said to be an air of uncertainty over his future in Italy despite his status as a crucial part of Massimiliano Allegri’s plans at the Allianz Stadium.

Bremer has started 29 of Juventus’ 30 Serie A games this term, missing one through a yellow card accumulation suspension. However, the Old Lady will reportedly consider offers due to their financial situation.

The report adds that Bremer’s representatives have an agreement with Juve that states that if his release clause is activated, he will weigh up a potential departure.

Varane’s half-time withdrawal in Saturday’s 1-1 draw against Brentford was the latest reminder of why he won’t be offered a contract extension on his current £340,000-a-week wage at United.

The French World Cup winner, who turns 31 in April, has suffered relentless injury issues since joining from Real Madrid in 2021.

He is likely to leave on a free transfer in July, with negotiations over a new deal inactive. Jonny Evans is also out of contract at the end of the season, intensifying the need for reinforcements.

United could sign two new central defenders, considering Harry Maguire and Victor Lindelof are entering the final year of their current deals.

Both will be in their thirties at the start of the 2024/25 campaign, too, emphasising the need for fresh blood at the heart of Ten Hag’s defence.
