Top 10 regions with most expensive car insurance for older drivers unveiled
Older drivers in some parts of the country are paying 63 percent more for car insurance cover than in other areas in the UK, according to shock new data.
Elderly motorists living in London, the West Midlands and North West England are slapped with the highest fees in the country, paying hundreds more than road users in other areas.
According to new stats from Quotezone, average insurance premiums are up 43 percent over the past year.
Unsurprisingly, London was the priciest region with over 65s paying a staggering £659.84 on average.
Greg Wilson, CEO and car insurance expert at Quotezone, stressed older drivers risk having their “pensions stretched” due to rising costs.
He admitted additional fees were a “real concern” for those on low incomes also battling extra cost-of-living rises.
He explained: “Those aged 65 and over are facing increased financial pressure as car insurance premiums soar by 43 percent across the country, from £334 – £478 in just 12 months from January 2023 to January this year – that’s an extra £144.
“These older drivers are predominantly living on pensions which are being stretched due to cost-of-living side effects – such as escalating energy bills and grocery costs, making this additional pressure a real concern.
“Although car insurance is normally at its lowest for this particular age group and well below the general UK average premium of £956, car-related expenses such as fluctuating fuel costs and hikes on repair and maintenance bills, are creating a challenge for older people to keep up with the cost of driving.”
According to the study, motorists above the age of 65 in London are paying £146 more than the next priciest region, the West Midlands.
Here older drivers pay around £513.43 for cover while road users in North West England are charged £510.59. Wales is the cheapest UK region for older drivers with average insurance fees of just £404.95 per annum.
South West England was next with fees averaging out at £408.94 with North East England next at £421.01.
On average, insurance fees for over 65s averaged out at £478.79 but experts warned there were still ways road users could save.
Greg added: “There are ways however for older drivers to find savings, such as never letting a policy auto renew and exploring the option to switch to another provider.
“Switching is an easy process which could lead to meaningful savings yet many older drivers are reluctant to change providers – the likes of a comparison site can be a real help to shop around and compare products.”
