Elderly British couple dies in Costa Blanca house fire | UK | News
A British couple aged 84 and 78 have been killed in a house fire in a Costa Blanca resort north of Benidorm.
Firefighters and other emergency services raced to the scene after being alerted by a neighbour in Denia but they later found the bodies inside.
Police are investigating the cause of the blaze but are said to believe it started accidentally.
And local reports suggested it began with a cigarette that wasn’t put out properly.
The alarm was only raised shortly before 11am yesterday but well-placed sources said there were clues the fire occurred several
days earlier.
The neighbour who raised the alarm is understood to have told the emergency services she didn’t see flames but was concerned because the inside of the windows were blackened.
There was speculation the property may have been smouldering for days.
The property where the couple’s bodies were found is on a residential estate known as Urbanizacion Betlems, near the landmark Montgo Mountain, Alicante province.
It is not clear if the couple lived in the house permanently or used it as a holiday home.
Post-mortem investigations will now follow.
Port city Denia lies 33 miles from Benidorm and is regarded as a gateway to the Balearics.
