Latest weather maps show 750-mile snow bomb from Scotland to London in huge Polar blast | Weather | News

The latest weather maps show a 750-mile snow bomb stretching from Scotland all the way down to London as Britain braces for a huge Polar blast later this month, bringing with it temperatures as low as -14C.

The meteorologists at WX Charts are forecasting that a band of snow will swallow Britain from north of Edinburgh to Southampton next Saturday, January 20 – a day after the UK will experience temperatures « colder than Iceland » and similar to the Scandinavian capital cities of Oslo and Stockholm.

Despite the Met Office maintaining that snow forecasts are not reliable more than two days out from the day in question, the radar from WX Charts suggests that temperatures will remain low, as a huge wall of snow heads towards the UK at around midnight next Saturday.

As well as the snow, WX Charts experts are predicting the mercury to drop significantly. On January 20, temperatures may fall as low as -8C at 12am just west of Aberdeen. Other areas of the UK may also be shivering in minus figures. Meanwhile the day earlier, temperatures could even plummet as low as -14C as Britain is expecting to see temperatures « colder than Iceland ».

The Met Office shares WX Charts’ outlook for mid-January, albeit without specifying temperatures. Met Office Head of Situational Awareness Will Lang said of the forecast for this week and the next: « There will be a resurgence in the really cold weather through the weekend and that spreads across the whole of the UK during the early part of next week.

« Initially, this means there will be more in the way of showers around the coasts, turning increasingly to snow for many areas, especially further north. »

Predicting the long-range weather forecast from January 15 to January 24, a spokesperson for the Met Office said: « Often cloudy across clearing central and southern areas at first. Thereafter, turning colder from the North, with brisk northerly winds likely developing widely across of the UK, bringing a risk of snow showers, most frequent across the north.

« Temperatures remaining cold, and a marked wind chill especially in the north. There is risk of unsettled weather pushing in from the south through this period, which could lead to a band of snow and sleet where it meets the colder air across the country.

« Confidence is low with regards the timing of the arrival of any such disturbance, but there is an increasing risk of something potentially disruptive at some point in this period. Widespread frosts continue to be a feature by night, with a risk of ice in places. »
