Nic Shacklock from Online-Bedrooms said: “It’s an unpleasant experience when towels start to go stale and have a damp odour after a few months of usage.

“Even after washing them the foul smell can still linger and the texture will have deteriorated. The trick is to use cleaning methods which hotels and spas follow to make their linens luxurious.

“Products like white vinegar, bleach and extra fabric conditioner are some of the ways to give towels a new spruce of life.

“Towels should be replaced every two years but they may be able to survive a few months longer by using these handy tips.”

According to the expert, white vinegar is a “popular” cupboard staple used by hotels and spas “everywhere” to keep towels in pristine condition.

The item can be purchased for as little as 29p a bottle from supermarkets including Tesco.

It works by stripping the dirt and residue out of the towels as well as giving them that soft and fluffy feel.

Britons can also use baking soda to help further soften their towels if they have the ingredient to hand.

Deyan Dimitrov, CEO of , explained: “Both common household ingredients can be used separately as ways to transform rough towels into soft ones.

“Simply add 250ml of white vinegar to the washing machine drum alongside the liquid detergent you normally use and dry as normal.

“You can also use bicarbonate of soda to make your towels soft and fluffy. Mix eight tablespoons of bicarbonate of soda with your laundry detergent before putting it in the washing machine.

“This will help loosen up the towel fibres and get rid of any dirt, keeping your towels as good as new.”

The laundry pro also recommended using a little less laundry detergent when washing towels to avoid stiffness.

Using too much can also give them a dingy or faded appearance, which can make them look older than they are.

The same goes for fabric softeners, and although they can make laundry smell incredible, too much can make towels feel rough.

The expert recommended using it every three to four washes when it comes to towels.
