Home car cleaning technique and cheap supplies could save drivers £175

A car cleaning expert has highlighted the exact inexpensive products drivers should buy to significantly reduce the amount of money they spend yearly sprucing up their vehicles

According to Motorpoint research, the typical UK motorist cleans their car 14 times yearly at £15 per wash for an annual price of £210.

The industry expert, Ben Custard at Motorpoint, said: “While you can always outsource your car cleaning to professionals, I’d suggest attempting to clean your car at home.

“It’s much cheaper to do it yourself, and you’ll have a better idea of the products being used and the steps taken to prevent damage to your vehicle.”

Regarding cleaning supplies, Custard said: “It’s a common misconception that you need to buy loads of expensive products to clean your car at home, but you can do a really good job with a few affordable items available at most supermarkets or auto shops.

“Plus, all you need is two buckets – one with car shampoo and the other with clean water so you can rinse off the mitt to remove any lingering dirt that could damage your bodywork.

“Before you start, be sure to rinse your car to remove any loose surface dirt.”

He added: “It’s worth getting a grit guard to trap any debris that you have rinsed off your sponge to avoid it ending up back on your car and potentially scratching it.”

Custard emphasised the importance of cleaning tyres since they’re your vehicle’s dirtiest components but clarified that you only need to focus on cleansing each tyre’s sidewall.

The auto expert also said you’ll benefit from cleaning your car every two weeks so that elements like bird droppings and wet leaves don’t cause more expensive paint damage.
