Food expert warns about risks of cooking bacon in an air fryer

Air fryers have revolutionised the way people approach cooking, making life easier for those with restricted or busy schedules.

Many resort to the versatile kitchen appliance for a variety of cooking and baking applications – but some foods may present some limitations.

Bacon, due to its high fat content and irregular shape, can pose challenges for novice cooks.

Dietitian Brenda Peralta, advised people to exercise caution when it comes to using their air fryers for cooking bacon, as this method can potentially lead to kitchen chaos.

Brenda, in a conversation with Yahoo, explained: « Given its fatty nature, when cooked in an air fryer, the fat tends to drip, resulting in smoke and splattering.

“This not only makes it tricky to achieve even bacon cooking but also leads to excessive smoke and odors. »

According to the recipe developer, this situation increases the risk of some bacon strips remaining undercooked, potentially causing foodborne illnesses.

Additionally, the accumulation of bacon grease in the air fryer can turn it into a hazard, suddenly generating smoke.

The splattering bacon fat can reach the air fryer’s heating element, leading to smoke and the unpleasant aroma of burnt food permeating the surroundings.

In addition to the unexpected firework show, creating an aesthetically pleasing arrangement on your plate with bacon can be a challenge, as Brenda pointed out.

She elaborated: « Each strip of bacon is relatively small and delicate, making it tricky to flip or remove from the air fryer basket without it breaking. »

Also, despite its small size, it doesn’t necessarily mean you can cook large quantities at once.

The dietitian went on: “The air fryer basket may not have the capacity to accommodate a significant amount of bacon, which can be inconvenient, particularly when cooking for a group. »
