‘It has to stop’: Suella Braverman attacks ‘bogus’ asylum claims | UK | News

Suella Braverman has warned that « far too many » asylum seekers are making bogus claims and accused the Church of England of facilitating them at an industrial scale.

The former Home Secretary made these incendiary claims tonight amid widespread reports that acid attack suspect Abdul Ezedi had been granted asylum after two failed attempts after converting to Christianity.

She wrote that Muslims were « pretending » to be Christians and healthy people were « alleging mental illness » to gain asylum in the UK.

Highlighting her historic support for Brexit, Braverman said that she was « angry » the UK had still not « taken back control of our borders ».

The former cabinet minister also took aim at the Church of England in the rant where she claimed it was « facilitating industrial-scale bogus asylum claims ».

She wrote in a column for the Telegraph: « [Churches] are well-known within the migrant communities and upon arrival in the UK, migrants are directed to these churches as a one-stop shop to bolster their asylum case.

« Attend Mass once a week for a few months, befriend the vicar, get your baptism date in the diary and, bingo, you’ll be signed off by a member of the clergy that you’re now a God-fearing Christian who will face certain persecution if removed to your Islamic country of origin.

« It has to stop. We must get wise to the problem. »

Braverman said she had set up a task force during her time as home secretary to root out « the grifters enabling this sordid business » but added the « bogus » claimants were still not being stopped.

She added in the piece: « Our system remains broken when asylum seekers convicted of sex offences may remain in the UK. Once you break our laws, surely you forfeit any right to stay here?

« We need a system whereby foreign offenders automatically lose their right to claim asylum or plead modern slavery. No exceptions, no caveats. »
