‘List of shame’ as UK imports at least 15 hunting trophies in single year | UK | News

People have imported at least 15 hunting trophies into the UK in one year – including lions, giraffes and leopards.

Campaigners have blasted a “list of shame” which shows seven giraffes, two lions and one cheetah were among the species brought into Britain in 2022.

Figures for last year have yet to be released.

Sonul Badiani-Hamment, country director atFour Paws UK said: “The list of hunting trophies species is a list of shame.

“From magnificent lions and elephants to reclusive bears, leopard and cheetah, thousands are a target for British hunters.

“Even the small vervet monkey and the shy civet cat have been tracked down, shot, and shipped home as trophies to hang on someone’s wall.

“The myth that is often peddled is that this ‘sport’ benefits conservation efforts, but in reality, it’s just a money-making business for its operators.

“That myth needs to be dispelled and the realities of trophy hunting made clear. The UK has an important role to play in this.”
Trophies were imported from South Africa, Zimbabwe, Tanzania, Zambia, Spain, Mozambique, Kyrgyzstan and Azerbaijan.

Eight hippo teeth and one crocodile skin were brought into the UK in 2022 from Tanzania, records from the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species show.

Ms Badiani-Hamment said: “Next month, a Private Members Bill will be heard in Parliament. This Bill, if successful, would ban the import of hunting trophies into Great Britain and help protect wild animals from the rifles and crossbows of greedy British hunters. While this Bill wouldn’t ban hunting itself, it would make it less attractive to those people who want to show off the brutality of their ‘hobby’ by having a dead animal on their wall.

“Last time this important law was debated, it was unable to complete its parliamentary journey due to the deliberate efforts of a few pro-hunting Peers who disrupted the Bill for their own interests.

« This time, we hope that Parliamentarians will recognise the need to act quickly and with rigour, by coming together to protect thousands of beautiful wild animals from cruel and unnecessary slaughter. »
