Before reports of the fire broke this morning, Britons were warned they may need to « plan ahead » for « major disruptions » this week.

Crews will start working on the M25 this week to update the motorway, and the construction is expected to significantly impact the area.

Matthew Harwood, lifestyle expert at Confused.com travel insurance, said motorists should consider « alternative routes » to the airport.

He said: “Road works affecting the M25 could have major disruptions to those flying in and out of London’s busiest airports next week.

“So those who need to travel to Gatwick and Heathrow are urged to plan ahead.
