Senate VP Calls for Government Action on Key Social Issues

Aboubakary Abdoulaye, the First Vice President of Cameroon’s Senate, delivered the opening speech for Parliament’s November session on November 12, in the absence of Senate President Marcel Niat Njifenji. During his speech, he urged government officials to prioritize social cohesion in their efforts. “The government must step up to improve the living conditions of our fellow citizens,” he said.
While acknowledging that global crises have, to some extent, hindered governments’ capacity to fully meet citizens’ needs, he emphasized the need for Cameroon to develop credible, effective responses to issues around security, education, healthcare, and purchasing power.
The Senate’s First Vice President expressed deep concerns about security challenges, particularly in regions affected by conflict. In the Northwest and Southwest, Anglophone separatist groups continue to disrupt peace, while in the Far North, Boko Haram militants persist in raiding villages. The newspaper L’œil du Sahel reported that nine people were killed in a Boko Haram attack in a village in Mayo-Tsanaga on November 12.
Declining Educational Standards
Aboubakary Abdoulaye also highlighted the declining academic performance among students, underscored by the poor results in the 2023-2024 school year exams. “The severe drop in student performance and the problem of school dropouts demand a committed and unified response from all educational and community stakeholders to find effective, sustainable solutions,” he said.
He went on to make further recommendations to the government for swiftly improving social cohesion in Cameroon. “We expect the government to continue, among other things, its work on public finance reform and fiscal justice and to curb inflation, which remains high. Issues like access to drinking water, quality communication networks and infrastructure, waste management, protection of state-owned lands, and maintenance of economic infrastructure—such as the newly acquired sports complexes in Japoma, Olembé, and Garoua—are all critical concerns that require attention,” he concluded.
