M6 traffic horror as woman ‘struck by vehicle’ on motorway as police make arrest | UK | News

A woman from Stoke-on-Trent has been killed following a « very serious » collision on the M6 motorway. The woman was pronounced dead in the early hours of the morning following a collision with a white vehicle near on a stretch of motorway near Warrington.

The woman, 52, was « struck » by the car according to police and a 52-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving.

Police were forced to shut all four lanes of the M6 between Junction 21 and 21a and it was only reopened after rush hour this morning.

In a statement, Cheshire Police said: « At 12.15am today (Tuesday 9 April), officers came across a collision involving a white car on the M6 motorway between Junction 21 and Junction 21a.

« Shortly after officers discovered that a 52-year-old woman from Stoke-on-Trent had been struck by a vehicle on the M6 to the M62 slip road.

« Attempts to save the woman were conducted, but despite officers’ best their efforts, she was unfortunately pronounced dead at the scene at 1.14am.

« A 52-year-old man from Preston has since been arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving. »

 

The incident caused travel carnage this morning as police raced to complete their work at the scene and reopen all four lanes of the motorway.

Traffic heading northbound had to be diverted and motorway cameras showed vehicles into the distance. The length of the tailbacks were believed to have been around 2 miles between the M6 junctions.

Although National Highways said that the estimated time for the road to be reopened would not be until around 2pm this afternoon, all four lanes were cleared by 9:02am.
