Doctor shares four best foods that will lower help slash your cholesterol levels

Having high cholesterol means you have too much of a fatty substance known as cholesterol in the blood.

Over time this cholesterol can build up in the blood vessels raising the risk for blockages.

Therefore, high cholesterol is a major risk factor for medical emergencies such as heart attacks and strokes, which occur when blood supply to the organs is cut off.

As with many medical issues, there are a number of things that can contribute towards having high cholesterol.

But diet is one of the most common. Luckily this is one that we can change ourselves.

With this in mind, an expert spoke exclusively with to explain more.

Doctor Kathryn Basford, from the ASDA Online Doctor, said: “High cholesterol is when you have too much of the fatty substance cholesterol in your bloodstream.

“If steps aren’t taken to lower your cholesterol, it can ultimately lead to blocked blood vessels which in turn may lead to heart attack or stroke.

“Diet plays a key role in managing cholesterol with some foods known to lower cholesterol.”

Dr Basford shared four foods you can add to your diet to help lower cholesterol levels.

These are:

  • Oats and barley
  • Beans, peas and lentils
  • Nuts and seeds.
  • Fortified milk and yoghurt.

Oats and barley

According to Dr Basford, foods such as porridge made with oats, oat-based smoothies or pearl barley can help lower your cholesterol.

She said: “This is because they contain a soluble fibre called beta glucans which forms a gel in the gut and helps cholesterol stop from being absorbed into the bloodstream. »

Beans, peas and lentils

Beans, peas and lentils are also really good sources of soluble fibre which can help block cholesterol entering the bloodstream.

Dr Basford continued: “Because they are a good source of protein, they are also good swaps for red meat – which can be high in saturated fats, known to cause higher cholesterol levels.”

Nuts and seeds

Replacing some of your favourite snacks with these could lead to a change in your cholesterol.

She said: “Snacks such as cakes and biscuits tend to have high levels of saturated fats which is linked to raising cholesterol levels.

“Try swapping these for snacks high in unsaturated fats which can lower cholesterol levels. such as nuts and seeds.”

Fortified milk and yoghurt

Foods high in sterol and stanol are known to lower cholesterol, and many fortified milk and yoghurt products have them added in.

Dr Basford added: “Sterol and stanol are plant chemicals that mimic cholesterol and can block cholesterol from being absorbed into the intestines.”
