The family of the unnamed officer were at his bedside yesterday as colleagues gathered evidence about the incident on Saturday evening in Swindon, Wilts.

The 17-year-old arrested near the scene was being held on suspicion of grievous bodily harm.

The injured officer was on duty at the time. Wiltshire Police said that it was “absolutely vital” that anyone who witnessed the collision should contact them.

A spokesman said: “A police officer was seriously injured in Swindon following an incident in which he is thought to have been struck by an electric motorcycle.

“We have arrested a 17-year-old male on suspicion of causing grievous bodily harm with intent and he remains in police custody. The officer is currently being treated in hospital for his injuries and his family are with him.

“The force is also providing welfare support to the officer, his family and colleagues. The incident took place at the junction of Faringdon Road with Westcott Place in Swindon at about 11.20pm.”

Superintendent Steve Cox said: “This is a highly concerning incident and our thoughts are very much with the Wiltshire Police officer, who was seriously injured in the course of his duty, and his family at this very distressing time.

“We have a suspect in custody who was detained nearby, shortly after the incident. It is absolutely vital that we hear from anyone who saw what took place or who may have dashcam footage.”

He said some members of the public came to the injured officer’s aid.
