Three dehumidifier mistakes to avoid or risk not getting the ‘best results’ from device

Dehumidifiers can work to help several problems including drying washing and preventing mould.

According to one expert, there are three mistakes people make which should be avoided when using the device.

1. Not cleaning the filter

Sarah Dempsey, cleaning expert at MyJobQuote.co.uk, told Express.co.uk: “Dehumidifiers work by pulling the air inside over and over to dry it out.

“Often, other things will also enter the dehumidifier such as dust and pet hair. This will build up over time and can cause clogs inside the system.

“Check the filter regularly and clean it with a damp cloth. Wait for the filter to dry before placing it back in the machine.”

The filter should also be replaced regularly to ensure it continues to work properly.

2. Using it in the wrong location

The location of a dehumidifier can make all the difference depending on what you’re trying to target.

According to the expert, the best place to put the device is close to the source of moisture, either right next to washing or where damp may be forming.

She added: “It isn’t recommended that you place a dehumidifier in the bathroom as they are not IP rated.

“Instead, place it just outside of the bathroom and leave the bathroom door open to help reduce air moisture quickly.

“Place the dehumidifier close to the area where there is the most moisture while also ensuring there is enough airflow around the machine for it to work effectively.”

3. Placing the machine too close to a wall

Sarah recommended keeping the dehumidifier at least 20cm away from any wall to get the “best results” from it.

It’s also advisable to keep it away from any draughts from windows, doors and air vents.

Britons should also clean their machines, following the manual to disassemble them before cleaning the water tank.

The expert added: “Then clean the filter and coils. Remove all of the accumulated dirt from the filter and coils by scrubbing in and up and down motion with a soft bristle brush. Spray the coils with your vinegar spray mixture and leave it to settle for a few minutes.

“Then, pour some lukewarm water over the coils to wash this away. Be sure to cover the motor to prevent any water from getting into that area.

“Clean the fan blades by wiping them with a damp cloth to remove all of the dirt and dust.”

Finally, clean the interior of the dehumidifier using a vacuum before putting the device back together.
