‘I’m a mechanic – here’s how drivers can fix their broken cars for less than £5’
Motorists can fix their broken car door for less than £5 using an ingenious DIY hack, according to leading mechanic Scotty Kilmer.
The YouTube star has urged road users to purchase a simple spray which can fix a door handle from creaking in just minutes.
A squeaking sound when opening or closing the car door is often caused by a lack of lubrication on the hinges.
Using a quick spray can help alleviate the issue with one tool in particular recommended by Scotty.
Speaking on his YouTube channel, Scotty said: “If you’ve got a creaking door, I’m going to show you how to fix it.
“There’s many sprays you can use but lithium grease is best because it’s made for metal on metal contact. This hinge is creaking like mad so let’s spray the heck out of it. Do the top open too. And voila.”
Seconds later Mr Kilmer opens and closes his car door repeatedly to prove the squeaking has completely disappeared.
The solution could prevent motorists from racking up extensive garage repair bills in the New Year.
According to CheckaTrade, fitting a replacement door can cost anywhere from £264 to £1,132 with an average price of £698.
Scotty added: “Now normally it doesn’t work this fast but this one really worked.
“The white lithium grease stays on. It won’t wash off quickly in the rain like WD40 would. So if you’ve got creaking doors, get some lithium grease.”
The solution can be purchased online for as little as £3.50 for a small tube while Toolstation sells it for just over £5.
Experts at Auto Repair Guys claimed that rust building up on the hinges could be a factor in causing the creaking sound.
They commented: “What is causing that is when you are driving the car, rain or snow, especially snow guys, that snow melting compound is going to get here hands eventually it will wear out the grease.
“Most likely on the bottom one, not so much on the top one but you want to fix that as soon as you can.”
They warned failing to fix the issue could result in the spring breaking which will force road users to buy a completely new hinge.
However, the specialists used WD40 spray which also seemed to fix the issue completely in seconds.
