Electric car crisis as target for chargers missed | UK | News

Ministers planned for there to be at least six rapid or ultra-rapid chargers at every motorway service area in England by the end of 2023. But just 46 out of 119 (39%) sites met the target – up from 23% in April.

The findings came in an RAC analysis of data from charger locator service Zapmap.

Four service areas have no charger options at all. They are Leicester Forest on both sides of the M1, Tebay South on the M6 and Barton Park on the A1(M).

A £950million rapid charging fund to aid the rollout, meant to open for applications in spring 2023, has so far not been opened. However, the Department for Transport said:

“The number of public chargepoints is surging. Around 96% of motorway services now offer charging facilities for drivers.”
