The pretty little UK village where house prices are starting to skyrocket
This pretty village has seen a 16.4 percent rise in house prices as it quickly becomes a prime spot to live in this county. Hawkhurst is a charming village that sits around 12 miles south east of Tunbridge Wells within the gorgeous High Weald Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.
One look around this picture-perfect slice of the county and the reason property prices are on the rise becomes a little clearer.
History is very much at the heart of this village, which holds a population of just over 3,500 people according to the latest census. Interestingly, Hawkhurst is essentially two villages that have merged together – The Moor to the south and Highgate to the north.
Both feature a range of unique features that set them apart but come together to make the area, as a whole, well worth a visit – or, for those with deeper pockets, a very desirable place to live, reports KentLive.
The Moor is the older part of Hawkhurst and is characterised by its distinct, quaint cottages that give the area its real Kentish countryside village charm.
These are arranged around a central, triangular village green while the Parish Church of St Lawrence can also be found in this half of Hawkhurst. It is estimated this church has stood since 1100, or perhaps even earlier, but much of what stands today dates back to 1450, when the nave was lengthened and raised while the aisles, porches and tower were also added.
During the Second World War, a German flying bomb fell in the courtyard and caused a great deal of damage, putting the church out of action for 13 years until 1957. Part of this bomb can still be seen today at the back of the church.
Highgate meanwhile serves as the perfect day out, thanks to its offering of charming independent businesses, two country pubs, as well as hotels and a digital cinema. The Queen’s Inn is a pub and luxury hotel, known for its stylish rooms and cosy atmosphere.
Established in 1561, the three-storey inn features a beer garden, a « rustic-chic » restaurant and a Georgian ballroom. It’s an establishment that has seen great praise over the years, landing an AA Rosette in 2018 and 2021 for Culinary Excellence, among many more prestigious accolades.
The Eight Bells is another of the area’s celebrated boozers, which prides itself on being a « traditional English pub », offering a wide selection of ales and tipples for all tastes, plus a homemade menu crafted with local ingredients. Past guests have raved about their experiences, with the pub holding a rating of 4.5 stars out of five from more than 200 reviews.
One visitor praised it for having the « best » Sunday lunch around », saying: « This is my absolute favourite Sunday roast around for miles. Really delicious, loads of meat, huge Yorkies and roast potatoes are just perfect! Staff are delightful, very chatty and friendly. »
Meanwhile, Kino Hawkhurst offers a movie watching experience unlike anywhere else in Kent, sitting within a converted former Victorian lecture hall. It features a café-bar, a heated oak-frame veranda and its own luscious garden.
