Red Bull called to the stewards with Perez at risk of losing points in boost for Hamilton | F1 | Sport

Red Bull representatives have been summoned to the stewards to discuss the right of review from Haas surrounding the United States Grand Prix. Sergio Perez is at risk of losing as many as 11 points in his battle with Lewis Hamilton should the protest be upheld.

The American team are currently pushing the FIA to change the results of the United States GP, promising on-board camera evidence that suggests a multitude of track limit violations went unpunished in Texas.

While track limits proved a contentious issue for the drivers throughout the weekend in the US, only Williams’ Alex Albon was penalised for them during the Grand Prix. This could be about to change and in dramatic circumstances.

According to Haas, Albon deserved a further 15 five-second time penalties, while Perez as well as Logan Sargeant and Lance Stroll were also allegedly repeat offenders at the Circuit of the Americas.

The teams will now attend a hearing on Wednesday and if all of Haas’ proposed time penalties are applied, Nico Hulkenberg will move up to seventh in the finishing order. Perez, meanwhile will drop from 4th to 10th.

Sacrificing 11 World Championship points is something that Checo cannot afford to do with just two rounds remaining this season. Securing second in the standings is critical for his short-term future at Red Bull.

With Mercedes and Hamilton struggling in Brazil, Perez opened up a 32-point lead in the battle for second place, but losing 11 points from the United States GP would move the British driver back in touch with two races left to go.

There has been some objection to Haas’ protests though. McLaren team principal Andrea Stella said: “I think it makes no sense to revisit in hindsight because had you had information all competitors could have adapted what they did.

« So this is certainly not something that you can act upon in hindsight, because it does affect what you do live. So, just in my view, Haas they have the right to request that.

« But I think what we need to work on is just a more robust way of determining the track limits and policing it. But then once an event is gone, is finished, then we move on to the next.”
