Europe’s cheapest city for British expats has coffee for under £1.50 | Travel News | Travel
As work from home becomes more of a realistic possibility for many Britons, some expats have decided to work from overseas. But where are the cheapest destinations for wannabe digital nomads?
According to research from the team at Norton Finance, Skopje, the capital of North Macedonia, is the most affordable city for British expats. A cup of coffee in the city comes in at under £1.50 on average.
As it’s a small city, it’s easy to travel most places on foot but public transport is also much cheaper than in the UK. Skopje is an unusual city as around 80 percent of the city was destroyed in an earthquake in 1963.
The city has since been rebuilt and expats will immediately notice the statues all over the city centre. Ranging from historic figures to lions, they have provoked debate over the years.
Skopje’s Old Bazaar is one of the city’s highlights with several small shops, cafes and bakeries to explore. ‘Arsenie V’ wrote on Tripadvisor: “Astonishing place! Visit the Old Bazaar without a doubt.
“For two distinct experiences, visit during the day and at night. Enjoy the atmosphere as you stroll through the various businesses, restaurants and retail outlets.”
Just outside the city and easily accessible by car or taxi is the breathtaking Matka Canyon. The Canyon is a popular hiking, kayaking and boating area and activities are very cheap in the region.
Although Skopje topped the ranking as the cheapest city for British expats, accommodation for digital nomads was cheapest in Sarajevo, the capital of Bosnia and Herzegovina.
