Tourists blast UK attraction because you need to ‘cross a dual carriageway’ to get there | UK | News

Tourists have complained about one of the UK’s most iconic attractions because it sits across a dual carriageway.

The Angel of the North has stood in Gateshead, Tyne and Wear, for the last 25 years and sees approximately 416,000 visitors a year, 8,000 per week.

The vast majority of those visitors have left glittering views of the northern warden, with thousands admiring the « breathtaking » piece by world-renowned sculptor Anthony Gormley.

While the art has won near-unanimous praise, its placement has gone down poorly with some people, who are less than pleased with the local surroundings.

Geordies otherwise full of praise for the piece of northern heritage have complained about its proximity to a dual carriageway.

Several people have written on attraction review platform TripAdvisor that, while they enjoyed their visit to the Angel, they found their experience tainted by nearby traffic.

One reviewer, railway_chap, said the statue was an « iconic piece », but complained about the lack of travel options, as despite having a dedicated bus, there is no nearby stop.

Posting their review earlier this year, they said: « There isn’t even a bus stop; you need to walk back 400 yards and find a crossing of the dual carriageway. »

Another local left a similar review, agreeing the sculpture is « iconic » and « impressive », but again they brought up the nearby dual carriageway.

They said: « Unless you know the roads, you can end up on the wrong road as there is only one entrance on the dual carriageway that runs past it. »

Others have taken the view that the attraction, which stands alone without additional nearby activities, is « boring », with visits taking five to 10 minutes on average.

But dissatisfaction with the site is by no means widespread among visitors, with thousands of people having given the statue top marks.

Of the 2,241 people who reviewed the sculpture, 1,185 rated it five stars, 707 gave it four, and 245 gave it three.

One visitor from New Zealand praised the statue as a « wonderful thing » as they toured Newcastle.

Another reviewer dubbed the sculpture a « credit to the area », and praised the easy and free parking.
