How to clean a shower screen with 30p item that makes limescale ‘vanish’
The reason shower screens become stained and cloudy is because soap scum and mineral deposits (also known as limescale) build-up, forming a whitish filmy or chalky layer in patches across the surface.
The driving factor behind both of these deposits is hard water. Hard water describes water that contains a high concentration of minerals such as calcium and magnesium.
When water dries on its own, these minerals get left behind, forming those hard water or limescale deposits that create a cloudy appearance on the screen.
Hard water also prevents soap from dissolving completely. The soap bonds to the minerals in the water to form a film that sticks to the shower screen.
Initially, soap scum and hard water deposits are mostly just an eyesore in the bathroom.
But left unchecked, they can continue to build up and harden, making their removal more difficult, and even growing mould and mildew.
What’s worse is that the combination of minerals and soap scum can damage the surface of the glass with pitting and etching.
Taking to the Hinch Army Cleaning Tips Facebook page, a cleaner has shared how she goes about tackling the task of a stained shower screen.
Susan Harris said: “So many people ask about cleaning cloudy stained shower screens.
“I’m a cleaner and never stop learning methods. I had the opportunity to do a before and after this week at work.
“I do this method and the stains vanish every time. I use a wet magic sponge (my holy grail!), wipe down with a wet microfibre cloth and buff to a shine with a glass cloth. Hope it helps you all.”
Households can pick up a pack of 10 magic cleaning sponges from for £2.99 – this works out as 30p per sponge.
Taking to the comments section, one user asked if any cleaning sprays need to be used alongside the sponge.
Sarah Bendall said: “Thank you for sharing! No products sprayed on the screen? No bleach or anything with the sponge?”
Susan replied: “Not a thing! Just water on the sponge. A toothbrush is handy round fixings though.”
Kelly Abbot commented: “I love these sponges. They work fantastic for nearly all stains.”
