The Red Devils have endured a miserable start to the season, and matters appear to be heading from bad to worse. Miguel Almiron opened the scoring at Old Trafford in the 29th minute after a swift counter-attack – spearheaded by Tino Livramento – saw the ball played through to the Paraguay international to squeeze past Andre Onana.

Lewis Hall then doubled Newcastle’s just six minutes later after the former Chelsea star fired a fierce volley into the far corner after Harry Maguire’s headed clearance. Despite the top-quality finish by the 19-year-old, Neville was quick to highlight the poor work from several United players in the build-up to the goal.

The Magpies were awarded a free-kick in their own half before quickly feeding the ball down the left, catching several United players off-guard as they were pre-occupied by protesting to referee Robert Jones about the initial decision.

Speaking about the goal whilst on commentary duty for Sky Sports, Neville said: “It’s a beautiful strike from Lewis Hall. If we go back to the free-kick here, watch Manchester United when they give it away, watch them five players. Look at them. They’re just sleeping, they’re complaining to the referee, whinging. And whilst they’re whinging, Newcastle are winning.

“It’s a wonderful, wonderful strike. Lewis Hall is a big talent, such a controlled, smooth volley. As soon as that free-kick was given away, the five of them were turning round and having a go at the referee whilst Newcastle were playing. It’s schoolboy stuff, like under-9s.”

Ex-Newcastle goalkeeper Shay Given also commented on how United were so slow to get back and distracted by the initial free-kick being given against them. He said: “It feels like the mood in the camp at Manchester United. There is so much negativity and they are too worried about talking to the referee and complaining to the referee.

“(Sean) Longstaff takes the quick free-kick and before you know it they are in the final third. I think (Diogo) Dalot again was questionable with his defending but this is Lewis Hall’s first career goal as a professional, and what a place to get it and what a time to get it.”
