The Smiths, directed by Doug Limon, tell the story of a bored suburban couple whose marriage is in trouble after they find out they’re assassins from competing agencies and assigned to each other.
The film was a major commercial, with a reported $486 million worldwide. Its production, however, was a publicity spree, as it marked the beginning of Pitt’s romance with Jolie, when he was also married to actress Jennifer Aniston.
Although Stephanie’s « Mr. and Mrs. Smith » tryouts seemed to surprise most DeGeneres viewers, she’s brought up the subject before.
« It was between me and Angelina Jolie, and I was like, ‘Oh, that’s great. I got a chance here,' » she said of the project in a 2008 Vogue interview. « All the acting really feels like I can do something. Whenever I do, whenever I have it working, it’s like a show. You play for a while. That’s the essence of a movie: a series of moment. »
