NEW DELHI: A day after the government announced an additional Rs 40,000 crore allocation for MGNREGA, Congress poked fun at PM Modi by recalling his famous speech in Lok Sabha in which he had called the rural job scheme a “monument of Congress’s failures”.
The party also asked Modi to revise the coronavirus relief package as it broke up the details of finance minister Nirmala Sitharaman’s announcements to argue that the stimulus element barely touched Rs 1.86 lakh crore or 0.91% of GDP.
Rahul Gandhi tweeted a video of Modi’s LS speech on the job scheme with the hashtag ‘ModiUturnOnMGNREGA’. “We thank him for understanding the vision of MGNREGA and for encouraging it,” he said. Former finance minister P Chidambaram said, “Those words have come back to bite the government. They called it a monumental failure and now they call it the safety net for the poor.”
Addressing a press conference, Chidambaram and party spokesperson Supriya Shrinate said state Congress units would carry out awareness sessions to spread the “reality” of the package that the PM pegged at Rs 20 lakh crore.
