‘This Is a Rarity,’ de Blasio Says of Video Showing Violent Police Action

Mayor Bill de Blasio of New York commended the police’s social distancing enforcement overall, but condemned a violent incident that raised concerns of unequal policing of the measures.

In terms of staying at home to the maximum extent possible, practicing social distancing, wearing face coverings, people deserve high marks overall. There are some people not getting it. And those people need to get it because they’re putting everyone else in danger. There are some instances where the rules are not being followed — that requires enforcement. The N.Y.P.D., again, overwhelmingly for weeks and weeks and weeks, has been focusing on enforcing in communities all over the city. In situations where we needed that presence to make sure that people were safe, and obviously, overwhelmingly, it’s been working. And we do not see incidents like this — this is a rarity. The video was very troubling. What I saw was absolutely unacceptable, and obviously discipline was swift by the N.Y.P.D. But I want to note that that video is more and more of a rarity. What you saw there is more and more of a rarity, we still have work to do, unquestionably, but the progress is very clear to see.
