NW/SW: War weapons discovered in alleged humanitarian ambulance

Three automatic rifles of the mark, AK47 and two consignments of ammunitions were found in an ambulance supposedly belonging to an International Non Governmental organization said to be providing relief aid in the North West and South West regions.

The Minister of Territorial Administration, Paul Atanga Nji informed journalists of the incident on Saturday, December 28, 2019 during a press conference to announce the departure of a presidential gift of 100 truckloads of food and other basic necessities to IDPs in the two English Speaking regions.

He said the alleged ambulance was also transporting two fugitives currently on the wanted list of security officers.

The Minister added that he has summoned the head of the organization who said the organisation was not aware that their field staffs were involved in trafficking. He also cited another situation where a during  the Press conference attended by representatives of some NGOs, Minister Paul Atanga Nji told them to have a minute by minute control of the activities of their field personnel in order to avoid such situation may tarnish their image.

He also highlighted the need for NGOs to consult local administrative authorities, and be transparent in their humanitarian relief efforts, while recognising the independent character of the Organisations.

The Minister cited an incident where an international organisation announced that it had distributed relief aid to some 50 thousand internally displaced persons in Kumba, in the South West region but after verification with local administrative authorities, it was revealed that; Only 20 thousand internally displaced persons live in Kumba, and No large scale distribution was noticed in the locality within the period in questions. The head of the organisation said his field staff didn’t file in correct information.

The Minister recommended that from partners should be shared in a public place with the items placed in front of each of the beneficiaries as government does.

He also urged them to always contact the Regional Governors and Senior Divisional Officers before engaging in their operations.

Minister Paul Atanga Nji however saluted the contribution of foreign development partners in to an end the crisis.
