A great portion of the Ekounou market in Yaounde has been brought down by fire.
The firefighter brigade in Yaounde got a distress call from civilians at about 9:45PM this Thursday December 26, 2019 after helplessly witnessing plumes of smoke go up from the burning Ekounou market.
Dozens of shops and market stands were ravaged by the fire which was quick to spread.
The timely response from the fire fighter unit helped contained the fire in under four hours preventing the flames from advancing towards the filling station located metres from the market.
The flames kept going for over two hours from 10:0PM to midnight until they were completely taken out in the wee hours of the morning by the fire fighters.
The fire fighter were well equipped with three water tank trucks, two ambulances and over thirty firefighters.
The troop deployed to the field was commanded by Lt. Ebanga.
Shop owners are still picking up the pieces looking for ways to move forward.
No human lives were lost but a lot of material damages are being registered.
The Minister of Territorial Administration Paul Atanga Nji was on site to appraise the measures taken to contain the fire.
He also extended his sympathy to the victims.
The cause of the fire is yet to be determined as investigations have been opened.
